Stimming, Eloping, and Pinching—Oh My! Strategies for Preventing and Responding to Challenging Behaviors of Young Children with Exceptionalities

Early childhood educators and early interventionists are well-versed in strategies for preventing and responding to common undesirable behaviors of young children. However, when a child has an exceptionality that exacerbates the intensity or frequency of undesirable behaviors and/or has difficulty responding to commonly used behavioral strategies, even highly effective educators. The purpose of this presentation is to share strategies for preventing and responding to more extreme maladaptive behaviors of young children with severe communication disorders and/or behavioral disorders (including autism spectrum disorders).  Particular focus with be placed on communicating behavioral strategies and collaborating with families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
